Blocked Call – A wireless call that does not go through because the network is operating at maximum capacity.

Capacity – The maximum number of voice calls or data traffic that a particular wireless facility can handle. Each wireless facility can only handle a finite amount of traffic at any given time.

Cell – Wireless technology reuses the same radio frequencies over and over again by dividing a service area into separate geographic zones called “cells.” Cells can be as small as an individual building or city block.

Cell Site – The antenna(s) and other equipment necessary to provide wireless service for a particular site. A cell site is also known as a wireless facility or tower.

Co-location – Locating the antennas of two or more wireless carriers on one facility; or locating a wireless facility on an existing structure (e.g. water tank or light pole).

Coverage Area – The geographic area serviced by a wireless facility.

Dead Spot or Dead Zone – A geographic area where there is no wireless coverage.

Distributed Antenna System (DAS) – A multi-structure wireless facility design consisting of multiple wireless nodes. The nodes are connected via a fiber optic cable or coaxial cable network to a hub. The wireless nodes can be attached to utility poles and other structures.

Dropped Call – A wireless call that disconnects or “drops” suddenly.

Enhanced 9-1-1 (E9-1-1) – A federally-mandated emergency service for cell phone users that provides emergency dispatchers the call-back number and approximate location of a distressed caller.

Monopole – A single pole that supports wireless communication infrastructure.

RF –  RF stands for “radio frequency” - the radio waves that transmit information from a cellular device including voice, text, images and music.

Search Area – A geographic area in which a wireless carrier seeks to place a new wireless facility to provide new or improved service.

Switch – The central facility that processes your wireless phone call by identifying its destination and forwarding the call.

Traffic – The volume or flow of voice and data communication over a wireless network.

Wireless Network – An integrated connection of wireless facilities that allow customers to send and receive calls and/or transfer data.
